Young Fury keep winning
Briitish heavyweight Hughie Fury had to go ten rounds to beat George Arias on points in Derby, England, on Saturday night.
Up against a 41-year-old opponent, Fury won 100-90 on the referee’s scorecard to improve to 16-0, including eight wins inside the distance.
The 20-year-old Fury, who is 1.98m tall, is related to Tyson Fury, one of the leading heavyweights in the UK. As an amateur, the youngster won a gold medal at the 2012 world youth championships.
Arias suffered the 13th defeat of his 69-fight career but is nowhere near the record of Kristian Laight, who fought on the undercard.
Laight was beaten for the 202nd time in a career that includes nine wins and seven draws. He lost to Nathan Kirk, a six-fight novice, and has not won once in his past 29 bouts.
Middleweight Nick Blackwell stopped Damon Jones in the sixth round of a middleweight bout, improving to 18-3, with one draw and eight wins inside the distance. Jones dropped to 13-1; 3.
HAWAIIAN PUNCH STILL HAS KICK
In Hollywood, California, Brian Viloria stopped Omar Soto in the first round of a flyweight bout. The “Hawaiian Punch”, who has held four “world” titles, improved to 36-4, including 21 wins inside the distance.
Soto, who had lost on a split decision to Viloria in 2010, dropped to 23-12-2, with seven knockouts.
In a lightweight bout, Brazilian William Silva knocked out Adam Mate, a Hungarian, in the fifth round to remain undefeated after 22 fights, including 13 knockouts. Mate fell to 15-5; 8.
In Las Vegas, Beibut Shumenov beat BJ Flores 116-112 on each of the cards in a cruiserweight bout, moving his record to 16-1; 10. Flores now stands at 30-2, with one draw and 20 shortcut wins.
Jean Pascal beat Yuniesky Gonzalez 96-94 on each of the scorecards in another light-heavyweight bout. Pascal, a former WBC champion, improved his record to 30-3, with one draw and 17 wins inside the distance. Gonzalez, a Cuban, dropped to 16-1; 12.
On the undercard, Isiah Thomas beat Jordan Shimmel on points, also in a cruiserweight bout, to remained unbeaten after 15 fights.
Andrew Tabiti had to go the distance for the first time in his career when he beat Roberto Santos on points in a cruiserweight contest. Tabiti now stands at 11-0, with ten wins inside the distance. Santos dropped to 12-2; 5.
Featherweight Claudio Marrero knocked out Rico Ramos, a former “world” champion, in the third round to improve to 19-1; 14. Ramos fell to 24-5; 12.
IN LOS MOCHIS, Mexico, Moises Fuentes stopped Oswaldo Novoa in the sixth round of a flyweight bout between two former champions. Fuentes improved to 22-1, with one draw and 12 shortcut wins. Novoa now stands at 14-6-2, with nine wins inside the distance.
