The potential bout between the 26-year-old Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) and the 27-year-old Porter(26-1-1, 16 KOs) would occur on October 3 at a venue to be announced.
Thurman most recently vacated the squared circle on July 11 after forcing veteran Luis Collazo to surrender on his stool following seven rounds of combat. Thurman overwhelmed the 34-year-old Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) and landed a steady assortment of powerful blows from the outset. However, although outclassed and battered, Collazo fought gamely and nearly collapsed Thurman with a brutal body shot in the fifth. Thurman survived the onslaught and shortly thereafter opened a grotesque gash over Collazo’s right eye. Collazo’s vision was obstructed by the constant flow of blood and the former titlist wisely submitted to Thurman before the eighth.
Roughly three weeks before Thurman’s latest triumph, Porter earned a unanimous decision victory over insufferable blowhard Adrien Broner on June 20. Meeting at a maximum weight of 144 pounds, Porter officially defeated the 26-year-old Broner (30-2, 22 KOs) by scores of 118-108, 115-111 and 114-112. Despite getting floored by a sharp left in the final round, Porter consistently pressed the action, dominated, and easily solved “The Problem." In contrast, Broner fought scared, frequently retreated against the ropes, and held onto Porter throughout the 36-minute mismatch.
While Thurman wasn’t overly impressive versus Collazo, Porter again proved to be a skillful prizefighter on the upswing. Still, named the 2012 “Prospect of the Year” by The Ring magazine, Thurman is an immense talent who is blessed with thunderous fists.
Provided this welterweight clash materializes, the bruising Keith Thurman will gradually weaken Shawn Porter and ultimately secure a late stoppage to remain undefeated.
