WBC: Floyd should honor promise to retire

The World Boxing Council (WBC) reminded Floyd Mayweather Jr. to keep his word on his supposed retirement and pave the way for a new generation of boxing champions.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said the undefeated fighter should vacate his WBC titles in a week’s time as a sign that he is honoring his commitment.
“He confirmed his retirement from boxing. For me, I think it would be something spectacular if he didn't return, because it would mark [the start of an era for] a new generation of fighters,” said Sulaiman in Boxing Scene.
Mayweather successfully defended the WBC and the WBA welterweight straps against Andre Berto in a technical but “uneventful” affair over the weekend. Aside from holding the WBC welterweight crown, he also owns the junior middleweight version of the title.
The American boxer said his 49th win signaled the end of his 19-year professional career.
Mayweather’s announcement marked the second time he retired from boxing. The first time was after he defeated Oscar De La Hoya in 2007. He came out of retirement to fight Ricky Hatton.
Sulaiman said it will be best for Mayweather to leave the sport at the peak of his health.
“He goes out on top, unbeaten with health and money,” he said. “If he can maintain that position [by staying retired] it would set an example.”
