Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s farewell fight was far from a hit at the box office as it generated his lowest pay-per-view numbers since 2006, according to a report from Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports.
Mayweather defeated Andre Berto via unanimous decision last Saturday in Las Vegas to hike his record to 49-0, matching the record set by heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano. The American superstar has insisted that he plans to retire after the Berto bout.
One source told Yahoo! Sports that the Mayweather-Berto fight sold "roughly 400,000 pay-per-view units," while another source estimated that it sold "between 500,000 and 550,000" PPV units.
Those numbers would be the lowest for a Mayweather fight since his 2006 bout against Carlos Baldomir sold 325,000, according to Yahoo! Sports.
Mayweather had been coming off a record-breaking fight against Manny Pacquiao in May, which sold a record 4.6 million PPV buys.
"To a large extent, anything we did coming off that massive May 2 event was going to feel like a bit of a letdown," Showtime Sports executive Stephen Espinoza acknowledged.
Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe, for his part, said they were "essentially competing against ourselves" in terms of PPV buys.
Mayweather was guaranteed $32 million for the Berto fight, well below what he earned in the Pacquiao bout.
