The 21-year-old from Westmeath was the firm underdog against the defending champion who had already been announced as the AIBA boxer of the year.
The Cuban team captain won a unanimous points decision in Thursday's contest.
Ward's silver for Ireland follow's bantamweight Michael Conlan's gold and middleweight Michael O'Reilly's bronze.
Irish trio Conlan, Ward and Paddy Barnes have qualified for next year's Olympics in Rio.
In other finals in Qatar, Morocco's Mohammed Rabii beat defending champion Daniyar Yeleussinov of Kazakhstan in the welterweight category.
Cuba's Lazaro Alvarez won his third successive world title by outpointing European Games winner Albert Selimov of Azerbaijan at lightweight.
There was gold for France in the super-heavyweight division when Tony Yoka saw off Ivan Dychko of Kazakhstan.
