May 29, 1968 was a historic day for India in wrestling as Dara Singh was crowned World Champion. In Mumbai (then Bombay) he defeated Lou Thesz of USA to win
the title. Dara eventually retired from the sport in 1983 after having been in over 500 fights. Surprisingly, he never lost a match during his career. In 1996 he was inducted into the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. Earlier in 1959, Dara became the Commonwealth Champion. His other titles include Indian Champion in 1954 and Champion of Malaysia (Indian style wrestling) in 1947. His contribution to wrestling has been seen as a benchmark for generations to follow. Other than the sport, Dara had also acted in several films between 1952 to 2012.
