Deontray hopeful to fight winners of April 29th heavyweight fight

As reigning WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder says, the heavyweight division is coming alive again. And Wilder, who is itching to get back in the ring, says he wants to keep it that way. Speaking at the WBC convention, Wilder said he wants to fight the winner of the April clash between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko.

The April 29th fight, set for Wembley, promises to be a huge event – with promoter Eddie Hearn speaking about the possibility of 90,000 tickets shifting – but Wilder against the winner could be even bigger.A monstrous unification showdown, Wilder versus either Joshua or Klitschko would contest three belts. Wilder must make his ring return first – pencilled in for February, opponent TBA – but as he says, his eyes are on the April mega-match.

“If all goes well, I’m going to get the winner of Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko,” Wilder said. “It doesn’t bother me who I fight. Let’s bring it! In my country, in their country. Let’s go.”

Wilder added how he doesn’t plan on staying in the ring too long, that he wants to accomplish his goals and leave the sport, his legacy intact. A win over the April winner would go a long way towards forming Wilder’s legacy. Indeed, many fans would look at the unified WBC, WBA and IBF ruler as the best big man on the planet – be it Wilder, AJ or former ruler Klitschko.

Wilder would be permitted to put his WBC mandatory defence against the winner of this Saturday’s Alexander Povetkin-Bermane Stiverne fight in Russia on ice, as per WBC rules which stipulate that a unification fight supercedes a mandatory – and no fan will complain. Wilder against Povetkin, or Stiverne in a rematch, could come late next year, and a much bigger fight that one would be if Wilder held three belts instead of just one.

As Wilder says, the division is exciting and alive again. Wilder against Joshua, in Las Vegas – talk about big!

Deontray Wilder hoping to enter the ring 2017

DEONTAY WILDER hopes to return to the ring in February after recovering from inuries he sustained during his stoppage win over Chris Arreola earlier this year.

Wilder retained his WBC world heavyweight title against Arreola in July but has not been able to fight since after breaking his hand and tearing a bicep muscle during the contest. Now back in training, the unbeaten American wants to make 2017 a signature year by facing the winner of Anthony Joshua’s April 29 superfight with Wladimir Klitschko.

“If all goes well, I’m going to get the winner of Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko,” he said at the WBC’s 5th annual convention.

“The heavyweight division is coming alive again, and we want to keep it that way.

“It doesn’t bother me who I fight. Let’s bring it. In my country, in their country. Let’s go! I don’t want to be in this sport long. I want to accomplish my goals, and leave my legacy behind.”

Wilder has trodden water since winning the title against Bermane Stiverne in January 2015, though he has consistently spoken about his desire to unify the division.

The winner of Joshua-Klitschko will hold the WBA and IBF titles, while Joseph Parker is the WBO champion after beating Andy Ruiz at the weekend.

If Joshua were to beat Klitschko, a fight with Wilder would be simple to make given their respective ties to American broadcaster Showtime.

Wilder’s next fight could be in the UK, with promoter Frank Warren keen to tempt the WBC champion to Britain and fight on BT Sport, potentially against Hughie Fury, cousin of former division leader Tyson Fury.

Anthony Joshua demolish MONLINA ..

Anthony Joshua Demolishes Molina in Three, Klitschko Next

Manchester Arena, Manchester - In his second defense of the IBF heavyweight title, Anthony Joshua (18-0, 18KOs) had zero trouble with stopping Eric Molina (25-4, 19KOs) in three rounds to retain the belt.
After the fight was over, Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport officially announced that his fighter will face former beltholder Wladimir Klitschko, on April 29th at Wembley in London. The vacant WBA and IBO world titles will also be at stake in the contest. Klitschko was sitting ringside in Manchester and afterwards he stepped in the ring, going side by side with Joshua and Hearn to announce the April fight to the live audience.

Klitschko has been out of the ring since November 2015, when he lost an upset decision to Tyson Fury. The rematch never happened after Fury withdrew twice, and then had a mental breakdown and vacated his titles.
Joshua captured the IBF title in April with a blowout of champion Charles Martin. He returned a few months later to make his first defense with a seventh round TKO of previously undefeated Olympian Dominic Breazeale.

Andre Ward set

According to Andre Ward, we fans could have, indeed, would have, seen a super-fight between he and middleweight king Gennady Golovkin this year had Team-GGG been willing to take the 50-50 fight that was offered to them. Speaking with TMZ Sports, Ward, now the unified light-heavyweight champion, said Golovkin was not willing to fight him until 2018, so he made the decision to move up in weight and challenge Sergey Kovalev.

“I think the fight with Golovkin should have happened before the Kovalev fight,” Ward said. “That fight was talked about, our teams had some correspondence, and it just didn’t work out. I’m not here to expose them or throw them under the bus or nothin’ like that. But I will be honest with the fans because there is a lot of confusion out there. They didn’t want the fight. They flipped it and said we were ducking and dodging. If you read the e-mail [of an offer for the fight] it was clear – we gave them a 50-50 split so there wouldn’t be any arguments.”Ward goes on to say how the plan would have been for he and GGG to each box a tune-up – as he and Kovalev did before meeting earlier this month – “then let’s get it on right after.” But Ward says Team-GGG wanted Golovkin to unify the middleweight titles first (he still has the WBO title in his sights) “and then maybe [the fight can be made] in 2018.” Ward says he was in no way interested in waiting that long, “so right after we got off the phone with them I made the decision to move up and fight Kovalev.”

It’s not clear at what weight Ward and Golovkin would have fought pertaining to the deal Team-Ward offered, but a catch-weight would almost certainly have had to have been agreed on. As things stand now, Ward says he doubts the fight will ever happen but that “if he wants to come up and take that kind of challenge, I think it would be a tremendous fight that the fans would want to see.”

It would of course be interesting to get Team-GGG’s response to Ward’s statements, but at the same time we must take Ward at his word. Could we have seen Ward Vs. Golovkin on November 19th instead of Ward Vs. Kovalev? Will we still get to see this Dream Fight in the future?

A this day in History Tyson Fury won

A year ago today Tyson Fury made history becoming the lineal heavyweight champion of the World, ending the 11 year reign of Wladimir Klitschko

Fury won a comfortable unanimous decision, with Klitschko only able to land 52 punches on the elusive Fury for the entire fight. The only time in Klitschko's 68 fight career he has lost via a decision.

Simply one of the greatest wins ever by a British fighter.

WBC allows heavyweight failed drug test to go on

BERMANE STIVERNE has failed a drug test ahead of his December 17 meeting with Alexander Povetkin, though the WBC are still allowing the fight to go ahead. The two heavyweights will meet in an eliminator to determine who will become mandatory challenger to Deontay Wilder’s WBC world title. However yesterday the organisation announced that on November 4 Stiverne had tested positive for the banned substance dimethyamylamine. Under the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program he was fined $75,000 – but will still fight Povetkin in Russia.
The Voluntary Anti-Doping Association – which conducts all of the WBC’s drug tests – will design a specific, more stringent protocol for Stiverne ahead of the fight, the costs of which he must pay for himself. The 38-year-old claims he ingested the post-workout recovery supplement SUPERPHARM without knowing it included dimethyamylamine, but under VADA’s rules an athlete is responsible for whatever goes into their body. The WBC took into account that it was Stiverne’s first offence when making its ruling.Earlier in the year Povetkin’s mandated fight with Wilder was scuppered after he failed a drug test shortly before the contest, however due to the minimal amount of banned substance meldonium in his system the WBC have allowed him another chance at becoming their No 1 challenger. Povetkin still denies any wrongdoing.

Anthony Joshua new investment.

ANTHONY JOSHUA, the Olympic gold medallist and IBF heavyweight world champion, is investing in a new state of the art boxing gym in central London.BXR, a members-only fitness facility, will open in January on Chiltern Street in Marylebone. Joshua and the BXR founders have brought together a team of boxing coaches, boxers, MMA fighters as well as sports therapists. With Jamie Reynolds, Joshua’s head strength and conditioning coach, and Dr. Mike Loosemore of CHHP involved, the idea is to offer its members the same kind of support a professional athlete enjoys.

“BXR is a passion project for me. I want people to train like I train. We have pulled together the best coaches, medical teams and equipment in the business and brought the ring to Chiltern Street, offering state of the art training facilities for anyone who wants to join,” Joshua said.

Promoter Eddie Hearn and music producer Mark Ronson are among those on the BXR founding committee.

The site will span 12,000 square feet across ground and lower ground floors, with a full size boxing ring and a range of training equipment. It will also have its own smartphone app to accurately measure and track progress using camera feeds and other analytic tools powered by RNF Digital. As if to confirm it’s a high end operation BXR will have an in-house clinic, interior designers have laid out the site with murals of Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali and even a Danish Juicery will be on hand. BXR are also the sole UK distributor of Di Nardo tailored boxing gloves, made to measure for members and handcrafted in Turin.

George Foreman encourages Tyson Fury

Heavyweight living legend George Foreman has heralded Tyson Fury as “distinctive” and a “maverick” and says that boxing needs him while he urges his linear successor to get back in the ring as soon as possible.

Foreman, in an absorbing interview with the Daily Telegraph’s Gareth Davies, added that the heavyweight division now lacks the buzz for the casual fan whilst Fury takes time away from the sport to deal with personal health issues.‘Big George’ said, “There are a lot of good heavyweights today and I couldn’t have said that two years ago. After Tyson Fury took the title away from [Wladimir] Klitschko, a name was added. He’s a strange fella, but a wild guy with a good style.”

He added, “Fury is distinctive. He’s the maverick. And I think that right now he is at the height of his popularity. Sorry to say, but his troubles brought that. Nobody paid much attention before but now you read that ‘boxer suffers this and that’ and he becomes the same as the rest of us out there. We want to see more of him. It makes him human. We need him, boxing needs him – and he needs us. We all need boxing to get better, so I hope he instantly gets back on his feet.”

The Two-Time Heavyweight Champion of the World, who will be forever remembered for the epic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ super-fight against Muhammad Ali and for regaining the World Heavyweight Title at 45, sympathises with Fury’s troubles.

He continued, “There’s no apprenticeship with the role. You are either the heavyweight champion of the world or you’re totally not. Once you get to be the champ of the world, all kinds of trouble comes your way. A lot of blessings as well, a lot of wealth. But you have to be prepared and armed against the trouble.”

“The weapon of mass distraction is that microphone. You can get in more trouble with a microphone and a pencil and piece of paper than a time bomb. You’ve got to be careful about what you say.”

Nigeria Nightmare returns to the ring .....Wow!!!

“Nigerian Nightmare” Sam Peter returned to the ring this week and hardly anybody noticed. Fighting in Mexico, the former WBC heavyweight champ stopped a 6-9 fighter named Juan Carlos Salas in three rounds. Now 36-3(29) Peter scaled 262-pounds.Still only 36 years old, Peter last faced anyone of note back in 2011 when he was brutally stopped by Robert Helenius. Before that, Peter lost his WBC belt to a comebacking Vitali Klitschko.

It’s not clear if Peter is again serious about fighting or whether he is merely picking up a little cash. There was a time when the power hitter was a genuine force and fan-favourite, but today it is almost certain Peter will not get anything like a big fight again.

Still, in boxing you never really know for sure. Maybe, if he can string together a few wins, peter could wind up being put in with a name.

A return with Robert Helenius would prove somewhat interesting.

Klitschko on Anthony Joshua in 2014

IN 2014 Don McRae interviewed Wladimir Klitschko, then the world heavyweight champion, for Boxing News. Klitschko had sparred Anthony Joshua, who now, two years on, is the IBF heavyweight titlist and is actually closing in on a fight with Wladimir Klitschko. Here is what Klitschko had this to say back then in 2014 about Anthony Joshua and what McRae wrote about the conversation:

“All those guys you mentioned [Haye, Fury, Chisora],” Klitschko says with a chuckle, “Well Anthony is definitely putting them in the shadows. Anthony has really great potential and a huge talent. I feel he is carrying something special inside him and I’m convinced he can make it and became a great champion.”Will Joshua eventually succeed Klitschko as heavyweight boxing’s most dominant force? “Yes.” Klitschko says emphatically. “He will be the next undisputed champion after me.”

Klitschko pauses when asked if he can imagine fighting Joshua – when their difference in experience, and age, is so marked. “Of course, he needs to learn more and get more experience. But he got some when we trained together. I can’t say for sure that we’ll never fight because it depends on how long I am going to keep going and how fast he is going to move up the ratings. So it depends on a lot of things. But look at Muhammad Ali – he ended up fighting his sparring partner Larry Holmes.”

That seems an unfortunate comparison, for Klitschko’s sake, because Holmes dismantled the damaged former champion – and ruined him a little more. But Klitschko warms to his theme. “I’ve had guys, like Tony Thompson, who were my sparring partners before they became my opponents. So anything can happen. But it’s important Anthony keeps both feet on the ground and doesn’t get too cocky. The big mistake everybody makes – and I did it too because I wasn’t focused and that’s why I lost a couple of fights – is to believe the hype. But Anthony definitely has an amazing future in boxing.”

Anthony Joshua lend his support Tyson Fury.

ANTHONY JOSHUA hopes his domestic heavyweight rival Tyson Fury soon makes “headlines for the right reasons again”. Fury last night relinquished his WBA and WBO heavyweight titles so he can focus on getting over the problems that have kept him out of the ring since he dethroned Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015.

Speaking to Boxing News, IBF champion Joshua – who could now take on Klitschko in December – exhibited nothing but respect for the plight of Fury, which include severe depression and substance abuse.“Each to their own – it doesn’t affect me directly what Tyson Fury is up to,” Joshua said when asked his reaction to the issues Tyson is attempting to deal with.

“I’m not one of these people who say, ‘He shouldn’t have done that or he should do that.’ Everyone goes through their own problems, everyone has their own situations that they’re in.

“You heard what I said, I hope he gets better, I hope comes back to doing what he does best, what he’s good at, and that’s fighting. Start making headlines for the right reasons again, and that’s really all I have to say on the subject.”

Tyson Fury voluntary vacate his tittle

"I won the titles in the ring and I believe that they should be lost in the ring, but I'm unable to defend at this time and I have taken the hard and emotional decision to now officially vacate my treasured world titles and wish the next in-line contenders all the very best as I now enter another big challenge in my life which I know, like against Klitschko, I will conquer." ~Tyson Fury

Fury has being declared Medically unfit

Fury v Klitschko II officially postponed again.

Statement from Hennessey Sports:

It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce that the World Heavyweight Championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko, scheduled to take place on the 29th October 2016 at the Manchester Arena, will not be going ahead.

Tyson has, this week, been declared medically unfit to fight. Medical specialists have advised that the condition is too severe to allow him to participate in the rematch and that he will require treatment before going back into the ring. Tyson will now immediately undergo the treatment he needs to make a full recovery.

We and Tyson wish to express our sincerest apologies to all those concerned with the event and all the boxing fans who had been looking forward to the rematch. Tyson is understandably devastated by the development.

We will be making a further statement in due course. Until then, we ask that Tyson and his family be given the privacy and the space he needs to recover during this difficult time.
